Personality, likes, dislikes temperament
If I use a word to describe myself, I think easygoing is the perfect word to describe my personality. Here are several reasons to support these ideas. Firstly, when I was young, my education and background influence me not to be so aggressive and should be humble to face any difficulties. Secondly, my family has very open and flexible tradition so that I can talk and do what I want easily. In everyone’s lives, they all have likes or dislikes, no surprisingly, including me. I love reading especially detective or scientific novels. Also I have mathematics because the fascinating induction makes me intrigued. However, I don’t like basketball mostly because I played it for three years when I was in university and then I injured my knee for two times so that I get surgery for three times. In sum, everyone has their unique personality, likes, or dislikes. No one can enforce anyone to accept things that they didn’t like. I believe it is the core of value for United States.

Describe your ideal spouse.

For me, the ideal spouse combines both external and internal beauty. To start, I would like my spouse to be tall, have dark hair and well, the eyes don't play a role as long as they show his emotions.Well, as far as character is concerned, I find sense of humor really attracting in a man and for me it is one of the determinant factors when choosing a partner. Thus, i would not be able to live my whole life with someone when he is not funny and doesn't understand my jokes. Also, in my opinion, caring for the other person and doing anything for them plays an important role.It is not fair for someone to give much and to receive little in return.Another important thing is that he should be able to put his family above anything else-his work and stuff like that.He should not be a workaholic. My spouse , besides all the things mentioned above, should be loyal to me.Because if there is an indiscretion one time how can I be sure it won't happen again? So, loving and caring for the other person means you will do nothing to hurt them- both physically and emotionally- and everything to please them.In summary, the ideal spouse for me would be a man who can combine most if not all these characteristics.

Option # 1: How has your perspective of life changed after comingo to America?

When someone spends all his life in the same country, his perspective of life does not change. After being to another place with different culture, his thinkings will probably be modified. This process takes time to happen -- that is what I have been going through.

Only two weeks have passed, but I have already learned a lot from my hostfamily, teachers and classmates. The more I get to know about other people's customs, the more I feel comprehensive and respectfull about them. This is very important to overcome a lot of stereotypes we have about foreigners, and make the relationship better among countries.

I would say being in contact to all these people has made me a better person. When I say contact, I do not mean superficial conversations, I mean real life experience together to them, sharing thoughts and feelings about different issues. I really expect to learn till the last moment I have here, and also keep in touch with them after the end of the quarter!

The first thing that changed my mind was the freeways. There were so many people using them. In Spain, you normally drive in one completely alone… but here is crazy!
I discovered no a long time a go that numerous people use freeways just to avoid the traffic lights. Now my mother is also avoiding them... that mean, more traffic.

However, the thing that has changed my point of view the most is being here in the UCR EXTENSION. You can figure out how Americans live seeing how they treat you in the streets, or what they do here for a living. However, in class, there is a lot of cultural exchange. You not only learn English, but also learn other daily lives that belong to other countries, such as Korean, Arabian, Chinese, Greek, Brazilian etc. lifestyles. It had made me more tolerant to people and their beliefs. I have hope they are also learning things from me, even if it is just the littlest and tiniest things.

If everyone could do these types of programs, where a lot of cultures are intertwined, we wouldn't mind our differences, and we will rejoice our similarities. Even if at the very end you didn’t learn English at all…

My Last Saturday

I don’t feel good. I think I ate too much the last saturday, which is the day I went to Universal Studios. It was such a hot day. Our bus arrived there 11ish. And we waited in a line for the ticket under the sunny sunny sun. That was only beginning of the day of waiting. We finally got into Universal Studios after one and a half hour. The first ride was the Simpsons. Oh, before that, we lost two of our parties. We kept walking not knowing they were taking pictures. The ride was super fun. It’s so amazing that people can feel like they’re riding roller coasters in such a small room. And to be honest, it was better than roller coasters. The next one was The Mummy. We didn’t have to wait too long and the ride was great. Going backwards was the best part of it, I think. After that, I got pretty hungry. So before we spend so much money on food we tried to think…. So, two of us bought passes called “All You Can Eat”. It wasn’t cheap, just so you know. The bad thing we didn’t know was that the pass didn’t include any beverages. So we could eat a lot of fast food, but couldn’t drink. Water was so precious. The next ride was Jurassic Park. It was the longest line I’ve ever waited in. Almost 2 hours. Beside the ride wasn’t any fun. The only dropping at the end wasn’t that thrilling. It only poured us whole bunch of water. But the other 2 rides were pretty much fun. And I did enjoy Universal studios. It will be another unforgettable memory from California. Just one thing…whoever recommended the Jurassic Park ride to us…be ready to get revenged. Just kidding! :P

After I came to here, my ideas about the America changed a lot. At first, the most important thing in here is the rule. The America's atmosphere looks like free but there are many strict rules. We should obey them. Or, we have to pay and go to jail. 'Rules' are the key point that leads the America.

Secondly, many opportunities are here. These are many chances to meet other culture's people. For example, in Korea, there are also many international people but not as same as the America. We can see the world more widen-eyes and open-minded. We can understand each other's country. A person can be more flexible than before.

Thirdly, we can be stronger - especially you're a foreigner. For example, you go to Universal Studio just for play. However, it is weekend and there are so many people. You must stand in a row at least 40min not only for a ride but also for your meal. As the U.S is the large country, there are so many people. Waiting in a line is mandatory. Also, many people came from their own countries. Many brilliant people people stimulate themselves. We can realize our deficit and try to resemble good sample.

In conclusion, I'm sure I'm not the same person who didn't know about the America. I can endure many hard things well than before. Also, the education - brainstorming and discussion class - makes me different. Rules, different cultures encourage me not to be the same.

2 Weeks in America

July 15th, 2010
Raye

When we think of the America, there can be many things - People from different cultures, large territory, English and etc. This is my third time to visit America. I went two times as a tourist. It's first time for me to visit again here as a student. Thanks for the opportunity, I can have a chance to know America well. Everything has strong point and weakness. I want to tell how I felt about the America.

At first, its advantages. We can meet many people from different countries. Each country has its unique culture. Customs are made by culture. By this reason, the American can grow up in the international environment earlier than other countries'. Another thing is its education. There are many brain-storming and discussion in the class. It's hard for find in our country. This can be hard and boring at first time but it proves its real worth. Really interesting thing. I'm sure that like these pattern of education made many celebrities - such as Bill gates, Steven Jobs, Barak Obama and etc.

Secondly, its disadvantages. It's also an unsolved problem of the America - racial discrimination. Sometimes I can feel the difference of the atmosphere of their attitude to their native people. As I was young, I didn't realize but now I can know. Also, as the country is very large, it's essential to owe a car. It's inconvenient for the people who don't have cars. Even we go to the supermarket for the food, we need a car. Without car, we cannot do everything.

In conclusion, I can have widen-eyes to see the America. There are many things to think about it. I know four-weeks is hard to know the much of its part. However, I already had many lessons - brain-storming, discussion with the partner, how to study in the international mates and how important the punctuality is.I'm sure this had a good effect on me. So till the end of the class, I want to experience many things as much as I can. Because I know this moment never returns and the way I can regret the least is do my best.

My travel to the U.S.

By Nina Star
Wednesday, July 14, 2010

When I applied to UC-R scholarship, I was hopeful to be selected, but I did not really think it was going to happen. One week later, I opened the American Embassy's website to see if they had posted the result, and surprisinly my name was there! That was the beginning of a great life experience in the U.S.!

Before traveling, I found out that I was going to stay with a very good hostfamily. It was the same family that hosted the last student that got the scholarship. The hostmother sent me an email introducing her family, what was very kind of her. Finally, when I got here, I just figured out that my homestay was even better than I had thought! Every weekend they take me to a different place, such as Universal Studios and Las Vegas. There are three korean girls living with them too. One of them is my roommate, she is very kind and patiente. We usually go shopping and swimming - there is a swimming pool there! Besides that, I am having a great time at school. I am very glad because my classmates are a lot of fun! I would be very sad if I did jokes and everybody stared at me seriously!

Unfortunately, I am coming back to my country in two weeks, I am not able to stay more. Even though, I know the time I have been spending here really is worth it. Wherever I go, I will take with me all I have learned from the different cultures I have been living with.

I have never been to America before. So I was very excited to be here. In Korea, I have never lived in dorm so dorm life is very exciting to me. All room mates are kind and funny. Even I think all people in the dorm are nice. I miss my family but I have new friends and teacher now. So I'm not lonely.
In America life, all things are fun to me but going a trip is the most interesting thing. Last week, I went San Cremente beach with my friends by myself. We ask the road to many people and We even succeed in hitch hiking. Finally we could arrive at San Cremente beach. We ate delicious seafood there and swam at the Pacific Ocean. It was very cool. I can't remember this trip forever.
Now, I have 15 days in America. My half of America life is done. I went here to develop m English skill because my dream is to be a man who works in a trading circle. In trade, English is a very important language. To achieve an goal to be a trademan, I'll study English harder from now on. I'm glad to meet class 615 friends and teachers. I want to get along with everyone and help me to increase my English skill.

Life's Good

I came to the United States when I was sixteen. Coming to America was the biggest decision I’ve ever made in my life so far. It was hard for my parents since I’m the only child in my family. But my parents were really supportive because they wanted me to live my own life rather than live the life they had already planned for me. I have to say that my life has been changing a lot in the past two years and I really enjoy my life here.
I’ve been starting to love and enjoy different activities. In the first year, I was in North California with a family who loves being outdoors. They would take me to do different things almost every week. We went to lots of places such as Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, Lake Tahoe, Monterey Bay, San Francisco, Berkeley, the Redwood National Park and so on. They took me to Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon. They often took me to do bike rides, the longest I’ve ever done was a 15-mile bike ride. They took me to rafting or kayaking on the American River where gold was found in 1848, leading into the California Gold Rush. My host mother used to take me with her to do community services with her club. I collected volunteer T-shirts for all the events I had done in the year and found out that I had about 30 T-shirts in my closet. The family also took me to hiking and skiing. I went on a trip with school’s Choir to Hawaii and learned surfing. I fell in love with drama and watched about 10 plays in one year such as “Noise’s Off”, ”Hairspray”, ”Lion King”, etc. And I was in one of the musical production in my school. New activities I did, new places I visited and new friends I made brought me a beginning of a new life.
Every country has its own specialized food. But in America, we can’t really tell what is “American food”. America has lots of cultures, in an other word, it has lots of different kinds of food. I hated cooking before I came to America until I took a cooking class in school. I learned to cook different kinds of food that are common in American family. My host family loved to cook, so I also learned a lot from them. I started to learn how to cook not only for pleasing my boyfriend and my parents but also accepting different cultures.
The life in America has changed me into a better person. I have to be able to develop myself in unknown conditions since I’m living in a place with different characteristics and traditions from mine. This means meeting new people, learning other cultures, accepting different opinions and values and listening to other points of views. First I thought some people are ridiculous, I still do, but I start to understand why they were thinking in a such way which was so different from what I used to think. I’ve been more open-minded, patience and calm. I’m more independent and responsible than before. For it’s up to me and no one else to clean my room, wash my clothes, tell me to do well in school, and organize my money, it depends on me to take the responsibilities and take care of myself. The changes had made in my life let me believe that my decision was right.
America is a country that the more you get to know it, the more you will love it. I love to be here.

p.s. sorry for the late posting:)

My Life in America

As an international student, I feel so lucky that I am living in California, where the most Chinese people live and best Chinese food are provided in the United States. It is the best place for Chinese people to live in. There are lots of traditional Chinese restaurants in both north California and south California, such as Little Sheep Hot-pot, Yungui Garden. Living in California gives me a chance to taste all kinds of Chinese food, even those I have never tasted in China. For example, I have tried some Dim Sam in South California, which was only provided in Hong Kong except for South California, and the taste of those I had tried before is much better than those in Beijing. The Sichuan food is also delicious, even better than what I have tasted in some good Sichuan Restaurant in Beijing. Moreover, I can taste delicious from other countries in California. Korean Tofu Soup and Sushi are both my favorite foods. It is also convenient for Asian people living in California, because there are lots of special supermarkets for us, such as Ranch 99 for Chinese people, Greenland for Korean people, and so on. I love food here. I also enjoy the convenience of living in California.

Another thing making me feel so lucky in California is that there are many wonderful places to visit. I like traveling, so living where there are many scenic spots is very important to me. Riverside gives me a chance to realize my traveling plans. Disney Land, Sea World in San Diego and Six Flags are all amazing theme parks worthy of visiting. Getty Museum, Griffith Observatory and Hearst Castle are all historical memorials that I really like. Since Riverside is just 3 hours far from Las Vegas and 2 hours far from San Diego, if I hope to have a good relax, I can go to the casinos in Las Vegas on the weekend, or I can drive 2 hours to La Jolla Cove in San Diego and view the beautiful sunset with my friends. What is more, many famous national parks are located in California or some places closed to California, such as Yosemite National Park (Central California), Zion National Park (Utah), Kings Canyon and Serria National Park (Central California), Grand Canyon National Park (Arizona, Utah and Nevada) and Redwood National Park (North California). I have been some of these national parks. Each one gave me some special impression. I really enjoy traveling in California. Actually, I had been eastern coast of the United State twice and visited Boston and Providence. They are both traditional American cities like those in our imagination. Compared to the western coast, they have more skyscrapers, more historical castles on ocean shores. However, I can’t breathe the air of freedom there. Narrow streets between skyscrapers even made me choked. It is perhaps because I prefer to natural things and freedom.

Finally, I feel so lucky because most people are friendly and humorous. I can experience how they love their own life and how they live with freedom. I think California is the state with most freedom in the United States. All people respect to others, no matter what is the color of their skin, no matter what is their native language. This is a place with real equality among people. That’s why I like this place so much.

My life in America - kiwi

It seems to be long time from my arriving America. This time my home is UC Riverside dormitary. And my families are my roommates and dormitary neighborhood. We play sports together, eat something together and talk about from daily life even to deeper topic. I miss my real family and friends in Korea, but family of UCR doesn't make me lonely.

We have had a lot of trip. I cannot remeber exactly what I went to for going so many places. We go a trip by school's trip or by ourselves. Of course, a trip by ourselves is more exciting and more rememberalbe but more tiring than the other. This weekend I had been to Las Vegas with some UCR friends without other help. It was very fantastic, so I cannot concentrate in my class after this weekend. But I'm ganna do my best job for classes here. Concentrate, Concentrate, forget the Casinos~!

I hope to be more mature after this short life in America. These days I feel many many new things. Some times it seem to be overwhelming to me. New people, new custom, new system, new foods, new whether. I have accustomed to all these things and I feel growing myself. I'm knowing that many persons from different countreies have totally differnt thinking and different culture. And I become to know that if I have an open mind to foreigns, I could make good relationship to them. I'm expecting rest of my life in America!

2. Is Forer's discussion of birth order accurate or inaccurate for the children in your family? Explain.

I agree Forer's opinion almost. But no theory cannot exactly apply to all cases. In my family, some discussions(of Forer's) are correct but others are not be applied. I, exactly saying 'we', am a twins. I have a identical twin brother and I'm older than him about 1 minute. So It is not meaningful to distinguish who is more mature physically. But there is scial order for brothers. For we are identical twins, Forer's many theorys are not applied to our family. First of all, it can be centain, parents always treat us by same way. They love us as same, advice us as same, scold us as same, although of course it's case by case. So most of
author's discussion about parents' attitude to children is inaccurate for us. But in part of 'How children see themselves and others' is somewhat accurate. Because when I read this passage, I was little surprised that it's like what I'm thinking usually. Although we are twins, I cosider my younger brother as more insufficient than me. Of course I admit my brother's abillity very well but I think like that unconsiously. So Forer's theory : older brother tends to believe that " I can do many things better than my siblings can" is correct. I also tend to expect other people to be relatively less capable. And I am very dissapoint to less capabale than any other in job i think important. But my younger brother thinks like me maybe, so it can be little different.

My life in America

Liam (Li Min Chen)

I think it is a good experience to come to America and enjoy another kind life that is totally different from my original life. I came here last quarter so I think I am adopt to American food and some interesting things. In the summer break, I go with my girlfriend to go to the north California. We drive for seven days and enjoy a lot of beautiful scenery. My itinerary is that going along the beach from Santa Monica beach, Pismo Beach, Big Sur, and then Monterey. First day we go to Santa Monica Beach, the ocean and shore is just like a diamond shining in the Pacific Ocean. We saw different kinds of birds and fishes soaring in the sky and sea. At that moment, we feel very peaceful and relaxed as we see such beautiful scenery. So does Big Sur. We woke up in the morning and then go to saw the beautiful dawn which is smooth wind coming through our mind and soothe our souls. Besides, I think Monterey is the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. Seals and mews come back and go for award. And we also eat different kind of seafood such as lobsters, oysters and fishes.

Furthermore, another place that I want to mention is the San Diego Zoo. This is a worldwide and famous zoo in this world. It accommodates different kind of animals such as polar bears, giraffe and mostly, pandas. What’s more, the aviator shows is most impressing stuff that I recommend everyone should take a look because it flies uniformly and plays different kinds of tricks.

Finally, if you like to enjoy different kind of excitements, you should take a trip to Magic Mountain which built different kind of crazy rollercoaster in this world. Also it built the highest and fastest rollercoaster and if you are dare to take all of those crazy stuff, I believe there’s nothing facility in amusement park will frighten you.

So Far, Fascinating!

I enjoy being in other countries than mine. I love learning and using a language that is not my mother tongue, trying such good food I can’t in my country and experiencing a different culture. I arrived here on June 24 at San Francisco airport and stayed in San Jose for a week and then came down here Riverside for school. And how’s my life in America? So far, fascinating!

I like to learn languages very much, and English is the language which I try to be good at, the most. I hear and speak English every day just naturally. Attending morning classes and doing assignments are not so easy. However, it’s very worthy. It challenges me and keeps me away from being so highly of myself.

Food is so good. Many of them are really cheesy or really sweet to me. And I do like cheesy taste and sweets. In-N-Out burger is the best I’ve ever had. I can’t believe that California is the only place that has In-N-Out. California, so lucky! Curly fries? My new favorite food. You should try it if you haven’t yet. I never knew I liked fast food this much. I fell in love with brownies. It is surprising to see how many pieces of brownies I eat at once. California has the best Mexican food in the world. I heard that it’s better than even real Mexican food somehow. I can feel I’m getting fat at the velocity of light.

The best part of being here is that I can meet people who are not from my country and befriend them. My homestay mother, Dawn has been surprisingly caring and kind to me and my roommate. (FYI, she is a really good cook, which is the reason why I’m getting fat at the speed of light.) My roommate, Kiko is a nice friend. I’m lucky to have her as a roommate. My classmates are eager to learn and smart. I’m so looking forward to getting to know them better. What I find doing fun is to just randomly ask someone sitting at a table, standing or whatever if he/she minds if I sit there and chat and be friends with the person. I’m really hoping to make more new friends and have fun with them.

My first travel from L.A to Riverside
The First time I arrived here, to L.A, my cousin and I were pretty tired. We wanted to go home quickly…

We have just landed and we were looking for the taxi we made a reservation for. We waited more or less 20 minutes.
We started our trip to riverside, when the taxi stopped (actually, it was more a cab than a taxi, and because of that it could take up to 7 persons) another family went inside. It was an Indian family that also was coming to riverside.

We take the highway to riverside, and when we entered the city an hour later, the driver started going down a very wide street. Half an hour later after that, the taxi stopped in the Indians’ house, and when coming back, we noticed that we were going up the same street we went down just a couple of minutes ago.
My mother was very angry because we made a reservation and we had paid more dollars than the Indians, and, even when we were closer than them, we arrived later.
In conclusion, next time we won’t hire a Cab to go to Riverside.

My first day in school
July 1st was the day we needed to register in the extension. So, my cousin and I enter the building and we get some of the registration papers. We both were pretty nervous because we wanted to make friends, but everyone looked like they have actually made friends with some other people.
Happily, after two queues, we got outside and met three Spaniards, and we befriended easily. Now, I free pretty lucky I met them.

One day in the pool
Today, we invited some friend to our house. We have a little pool and it is very refreshing being there.
Four of our friends stayed for the noon in our pool. We made many photos and we had lots of fun.
Afterwards, at 3 o’clock, we went to eat something at Subway, and we talked about football.
Finally, they needed to go, but I hope tomorrow we can go to the mall

Homework for July 10, 2010

Homework Assignment for July 10, 2010
(Write 3 paragraphs about my life in America)
By Vita

My student life in America during summer 2010 has been very interesting so far.To start, the people working in UCR are helpful, polite and understanding. Each class consists of 10 to 15 students, which is very different from classes in my home country. The books are well-structured and help the students familiarize themselves with American grammar and writing.Having a cafeteria inside the school is very convenient especially during lunch hour. Finally, I enjoy hanging out in the patio and doing my homework because it is very quiet there.

On the other hand, my fun life in the U.S. began with the school's optional trip in Disneyland. We went there on America's Independence Day and saw the firework show. Before that, we got soaked in the Splash Mountain Ride and travelled to space with the Space Mountain Ride. The most fascinating part of my day there was that I was portraited as a caricature.
In addition, during my free time after school I enjoy watching television as there are many sleuthing series which I like!

And now let's pass to the most annoying part here in the U.S.: the food. Mostly fast food is available for students here. This type of food is unhealthy and is offered in big portions. So, I am thinking inside my head: How am I going to be in one month from now? a) Fat because I will be eating those gorilla steaks? or b) Skinny because I won't be eating any food at all?
I am sure there are a lot more things to see in the U.S. but so far these are the ones I have experienced.

Is Forer’s discussion of birth order accurate or inaccurate for the children in your family? Explain.

Vida
Reading / Writing
July 7, 2010

Forer’s essay brings us a novel view to consider the relationship among family members. In my eyes, his discussion of birth order is accurate for the children in general cases. It explained well why the children in the same family turned into people with such different characteristics. In the following paragraphs, I will testify his opinion by two examples which are close to my life: birth orders in my family and in my mother’s family.

My family is composed of four people: dad, mom, grandma and me. I’m the only child of my parents. When I was a baby, my parents hovered over my all the time tensely and anxiously with great expectation. If I struggled with some problems, they would give me a hand and protect me without hesitation. Their on-going protection and concerns are the main obstacles for me to change my perception of being a child to being an adult. In addition, as mentioned in Forer’s essay, the feeling of insecurity is always surrounding me. Being afraid of loneliness and helplessness, I am always trying to learn as much as possible and solve problems by myself. Independently solving problems guarantees the only child for living in a good condition without the help and protection of his or her parents.

My mother’s family is another typical case to prove Forer’s opinion. Living in a family with four children, my mom, the eldest child in the family, played a role of barrier between children and their parents. She is responsible and parental to her siblings, always treating herself as a model of her younger siblings. Even when they had grown up, she was still trying to lead them, protect me and teach them. She has a strong sense of responsibility to her siblings. She often said, “If I don’t help them to deal with the problems, I cannot face to my soul.” In terms of the attitude of parents to them, she was paid much more attention on than her siblings. For example, her parents were very strict to her behavior. She was required to go home early in the evening. Otherwise, she would be locked outside the door. She was also required to study hard, as well as take care of her younger siblings. The high stress in her early life made her characteristics as seriousness and responsibility. In comparison, her siblings were more relaxed than her. They often have more freedom and have a chance to treat things in an easy way. They were never worried about being locked outside the door if they went back to home late in the evening because their parents became more tolerant to them with the experience on my mom.

The patterns of my family and my mom’s family exactly match the conditions Forer mentioned in his essay. Although these two examples hardly represent the conditions of all cases, it is obviously that Forer’s opinion is accurate in general cases.

How to explain the differences between children in the same family

By Nina Star
Dingread/Tingwri Class
July 7, 2010

Today's discussion at Dingread/Tingwri Class was very interesting. We discussed over the text "How your Birth Order influences your life adjustment", by Lucille K. Forer. It basicaly shows how birth order can shape people's personality and believings. I agree with it in many parts, but I don't believe birth order is the only explanation for the differences between children in the same family.

One thing that shapes people's personality is the culture of the country they live. For example, their parents may be more strict, or more relaxed, and that will interfere in how they will raise their children. Another factor is what kind of friends the sibling has. Depending on the person's personality, a friend can siriously affect his thinkings.

Besides the general aspects, such as society influence, it also depends on the sibling's personality. I believe everybody is born with something diferent, particular. At the end, if this particularity is strong enough, it is what really matters.

I really think, deep inside, that we can always choose our ways. It is interesting to try to explain why people behave the way they do, but it is not right to say that the world arround us can change who we are. What really happens is that different people react in a different way about the same happening. The world can influence us, but it is always our choice to accept it, or not.

Is Forer’s discussion of birth order accurate or inaccurate?

Is Forer's discussion of birth order accurate or inaccurate
for the children in your family?
I think that the Forer's discussion of birth order accurate for the children in my family.
For example, Forer mentions that the first child does not have unlimited time view himself as the child in the relationship with his parents. This is a true opinion. When I became a older brother from a single child, I struggled to be parental. Because my parents want me to do so.
And also, author mentions that parents usually expect their oldest child to be more capable and more responsible than the younger children. This is exactly true. My parents want me to study harder than my brother do and they want me to take care of my younger brother.
In my younger brother's case, he enjoys many advantages as a result of having more relaxed parents. And he is more current to move gradually from child to adult. These two things are correctly consistent with what the author mentions.
So I think that the author's discussion is accurate in my family.

Question 3
Can you think of another explanation to the differences between children in the same family? Why?

The text we have read this morning only talks about the influence family and birth place takes in our lives. However, there are a lot of facts that influences in us as persons.

The first we should talk about is about our genes, our natural heritage from our parents. Maybe this genes won’t determinate our personalities, but it will influenced our physical bodies. For example, they will make us tolerant to lactose, or maybe we will have more tickets of being sick, or develop a cancer.

This is important because the body condition will end up affecting our lives. Our mental health is completely dependant on our body health. Because of it, when we become sick more often in our life, we tend to be lonelier or sadder than someone who rarely gets an illness, who will be happier.

The second thing we need to take in account is the people we have in our lives. Not only the family but also your friends, teachers, partners or we can even count people we talk to in the bus.
This people share their lives with ours. They also influenced in our decisions, which are important to build our personality.
In addition, people also share their experiences and opinions. This information will also have an impact in our personality, believes and empathy.

We can also talk about or gender. Right now, and in general, people are really trying to support the idea of everyone being its own person and being unique. Ironically, some people try to tell us both men and women are the same. Being a boy or a girl is one more difference between individuals.

Because of your gender, we get difference expectations. If you just pay attention to a child rising, it varies if the child is a girl or a boy, especially in more traditional families where girls’ duties are to take care of their husband and their children.

However, even nowadays in a culture where we are supposed to raise our children without caring about our gender, boys tend to be stronger and usually play sports better than girls do. In the other hand, girls tend to be more empathic with people, and even when they are young they usually play with dolls, which nurture their mother nature.
The differences grew bigger in adolescence, when the bodies of girls and boys change. Girls need to take care of their period and boys have to deal with the change of their voices.
At the same time, girls worry more about they beauty and health meanwhile boys try to be more confident and be (or look) stronger.

The last thing I will talk about, and for me is one of the most important ones, is the experiences we live.
Essentially, we easily change our minds over and over again. And that is because we live so many different experiences over time. But this is important, because the most important thing about life is not getting the good decision, but rather the one is a mistake.
These mistakes are the ones that affect our personalities more. When you take a good decision, you get happy. But when you get a good one, you learn from it.
We can easily think about personality as our methods to make decisions and to consider our choices. After all, as human beings we are, we keep doing decisions. It doesn’t matter what moment, or even second, you are. You are always making decisions, and that is the condemnation of our freedom.

To sum up, even if birth place will affect us, there are so much other facts that will completely influence in our personalities. On account of this, we should be able to have different personalities than just the ones the birthplace gives to us.

How’s Your Birth Order

How’s Your Birth Order
Can you think of another explanation for the differences between children in the same family? Explain.

This essay provides us several proofs to support the idea of birth order related to children. In my point of views, I believe the author misses some critical points because the birth order is not the only reason to affect the personality of children.
First of all, I think the family education is the main way to effect children how they grow and what they will be. If parents give their children a straight and right way to imitate and learn what to do and then they will easily get the right track to go.
Secondly, peer influence is another reason to affect people. For example, peers may cause children doing things without any consideration and decision. It will lead some severe problems once children cannot get some right and good friend.
Finally, I think another explanation for the differences for children is about the school education. With the care of parents, children’s personality is composed of school education such as logic training, linguistic courses or memorizing technique. In the school, all of these courses make children to use their knowledge to solve our daily problems and feel our life. With those procedures, children shape their own personalities and values.
To sum up, what I am perspective on birth order is that I think the author just use birth order to describe and explain the personalities of children is not quite true. If the author adds more information that I mention before, I believe this essay will be more convincing and logical.

Do I think the author's discussion applies more to the typical families in the US than to families in general

Yes, I do.
Let's just say there's no father in this family. There's only a mother and a boy who has an older sister. In this case, ten to one, the boy thinks he's the man in the family who has to take care of his mother and sister. But also, his siter, who is the first child, thinks she needs to look over his little brother. Therefore, they both are likely to be responsible and capable.
Another .What if the oldest one has some kind of disabilities such as mental disorder? In this case, the second oldest would be the most caring one. The oldest one could also be caring in spite of his/her problem, but it can't be as much as the second oldest is.
This article is based on the premise that siblings are either all male or all female and every member in the family exists and is well, which is apparently not able to be true, always. It does apply to the typical families or at least families that are thought as ordinary by people. And not only the ones in the US, but also everywhere. It just doesn't cover many cases that are possible.

Gender Differences Result in Differences in Siblings

The explanations for the differences between children in the same family we learned today can be summarized as position in the sibling system, parents' experiences and attitudes and roles assumed by the siblings. Besides these reasons, I think gender, school experiences, accidents, illness can result in the differences in siblings too.
I'm going to explain one of the reasons I listed above - gender. Expected behavior for siblings may depend on the child's birth order and whether the child is male or female. For example, at all ages, sisters are reported to be, and report themselves to be, closer to one another than are brothers or cross-sex sibling pairs (Sibling Relationships). A project which was held in University of North Carolina did an experiment on forty same-sex and cross-sex school-aged sibling pairs in their homes during self-selected activities. It showed that male dyads interacted less than other sibling groups. Older sisters in female dyads most capture in teaching. Older female siblings, whether the younger sibling is male or female, often take the organizer role. In the project also noted the affective differences related to gender. "Younger girls with older brothers and younger boys with older sisters evidenced the least gender stereotyping"(Sex Roles).
According to the research, it is believable that the difference in gender can also result in the differences between children that are raised in the same family.

How Your Birth Order
Influences Your Life Adjustment(Chose 2nd question)

I think it's not applied to my family. Author mentioned that the oldest children have a tendency to have more responsibilities than other siblings and see other guys as less capable than them. Partially I agree because the Oldest Asian children have a great responsibility to take care of their families when there are no parents around them. But I don't agree in the saying that the oldest children see other guys as less capable. I believe that every people has a specific talent when they are born. That is I believe every person has a potential to accomplish something they want to do. So In this point of view, I can't see other guys as less capable than me. And another thing is that the story claimed youngest children is dependent to other people such as their older siblings or their parents, I also disagree with that insist. Because my younger sister is really independent and does her own work with no help. It's true we need help when we face difficulties, but she just wants to do her own until she can't do anything without someone's help.
Also I disagree that the oldest children serve as a barrier between their parents and younger siblings. I think the oldest children can be a way to communicate between their parents and other siblings. But I agree some parts that the author mentioned in this story. Author mentioned
that the parents have a tendency to expect their oldest children to be more responsible to their family and be capable of all things that parents can get advantages. This explains exactly what Asian oldest children thinking about birth order and the way they are looking at the world. But I think Asian oldest children may feel a lot of pressure to do well and meet their parent's expectations from surroundings. The reason why Asian people, especially Eastern Asian people think like this way is that we thought Confucianism is the best idea and followed what Confucianism taught. This idea influences greatly to many modern Asian families including my family ,although it faded since Western culture flowed . But still Asian oldest children have more responsibilities than those from other continents. In this viewpoint I think it can be accurate partially for our family.

Can you think of another explanation for the differences between children in the same family?
Explain.

As mentioned by writer Lucille K. Forer, birth order can affect a child's personality. However, it
is not the only factor. There are some other aspects which can determine some of the child's characteristics. Firstly, I believe gender is one of them. Both girls and boys have to take care of their bodies in a different way. While girls have to take precautions in certain periods, boys do not share that experience, thus behaving more recklessly at times. Moreover, females have to prepare themselves for becoming mothers while males do not need to be prepared about that.

Secondly, parents play a major role in shaping a child's personality. Some children prefer to have discussions with their parents about their problems while others like to keep their concerns for themselves. Based on the parent's behavior on these two types of children their personality differs.

Thirdly, one of the most important factors is the child's relatives and friends. By talking, playing and arguing with people other than his parents the child develops communication skills which are an integral part of his personality. And last but not least, teachers are responsible for developing learning skills and traits. These include reading and writing skills as well as thinking and apprehending.

To sum up, while birth order does affect a child's personality, it is not the determinant factor. Others such as the ones mentioned above also contribute.

How Your Birth Order Influences
Your Life Adjustment – Q.2

I agree with most of the author’s opinion. He wrote well about the characteristic of the birth order. Without some exceptions, it makes sense. The oldest behave like leader-who is independent and confident and responsible for their choice- but most of the middle & the youngest are dependent to their parents or siblings.

However, sometimes the middle and the youngest are success faster than the oldest because they can learn from the oldest. They already have seen many things because of their siblings. And they think the most of parent’s attention or expectation is toward the oldest. So if they want to get more attention from their parents, they have to do something really hard. By this reason, some of the celebrities are the middle or the youngest. They wanted to catch up the oldest by their effort and time.

I think this can be applied to my family. We’re family of four - father, mother, me and younger brother. I’m the oldest and my brother is the youngest. As today’s society, most of the family members are 4. First child would be the oldest and the second one would be the youngest. It’s hard to find the middle.

I’m more active, positive, independent and parental than my brother. He is 3-year-old younger than me. He’s tattletale, independent, protected by parents than me. As time goes by, he’s independent-still dependent to parent than me. However, he’s really fast learner. I’m slower than him. His personality is opposite to me. I like playing sports, learning language, listening to music but he just likes playing games. He’s good at math and science. He’s little bit pessimistic, too.

In the same apartment, parents, we grew up very differently. Personality depends on many things. – such as dwellings, friends, classmates, hobbies, their interests and their dreams. As I said the above, also there are some exceptions. When the oldest is really sick, then parents are busy for caring him. The middle or the youngest has to do not only his/her role but also the oldest’s role. The situation and circumstance can change one’s birth order role. But exception is just an exception. This interesting description suits me and my brother well.
